Every year the same thing happens. People plan in the second week of August, find nothing available within 150 km of Pune, and end up paying peak rates for a mediocre room. Resorts near Pune are typically full for this weekend by the first week of the month.
Where to go
- Shirwal (58 km from Pune): lakeside, flat highway drive, no ghat. Best option if you want the weekend to start the moment you arrive rather than after a two-hour crawl.
- Wai and Panchgani (100 km): beautiful, but the ghat roads get slow and foggy in August.
- Mahabaleshwar (110 km): peak-season crowded on a long weekend.
- Kaas Plateau (80 km): the wildflower bloom starts late August — worth a day trip if your dates run later in the month.
A three-day plan
Friday evening: drive down after work. Late dinner, early night.
Saturday: flag hoisting at the property in the morning, lake walk, lunch, indoor games through the afternoon shower, bonfire and dinner.
Sunday: a day trip to Wai or Kaas, or simply nothing at all. Both are legitimate.
Monday, if you have it: slow breakfast, late checkout, drive back after 3 pm.
