By August the landscape around Shirwal has had two months of rain. Everything is green, the lake is full, and the skies do something interesting almost every evening. If you shoot at all, this is the month to come.
The mist window: 6:00 – 7:30 am
Low mist sits on the lake at first light and burns off within ninety minutes. Shoot from the eastern bank looking west while the far shore is still half-erased. A tripod helps; light levels are low and you will want the shutter open.
Midday: go abstract
Harsh light is rare in monsoon, but flat grey light is common. Use it. Water texture, reeds, raindrops on leaves, reflections in puddles — the details work better than the wide landscapes at this hour.
Golden hour: 6:15 – 7:00 pm
The 45 minutes before sunset is the money window. Broken cloud after an afternoon shower gives you colour that no filter reproduces. Shoot west across the water with something in the foreground — a boat, a jetty, a person.
Blue hour and beyond
Ten minutes after the sun goes, the lake turns steel blue and the resort lights come on. Long exposures here are the frames people actually print.
Gear notes for monsoon
- Rain sleeve or a plain shower cap over the body; both work
- Microfibre cloths, plural — one is never enough
- Silica gel in the bag, and never change lenses in the open
- Let gear acclimatise before shooting from an air-conditioned room, or you will fight condensation for an hour
- Drones: fly only in clear windows and keep well away from birds on the water
