The short answer: Mahabaleshwar is about 120 km from Pune, usually a 3–3.5 hour drive via NH48 south to Surur, then through Wai and Panchgani. The drive splits naturally in half at Shirwal, 58 km from Pune. Stopping there, for breakfast or for a night at a lakeside resort, turns a tiring ghat day into an easy two-leg trip.

    The route, step by step

    LegDistance (approx.)Typical timeWhat to expect

    Khed Shivapur → Shirwal~33 km30–40 minFast, four-lane NH48
Shirwal → Khambatki Ghat → Surur turn-off~20 km25–35 minShort ghat section; slow trucks on the climb

Why break the journey at Shirwal

Most people drive to Mahabaleshwar in one push, arrive tired, and lose half a day to Saturday traffic on the plateau. Shirwal changes the maths:

    • It's the last easy stretch. Everything up to Shirwal is fast highway; the ghats start after it. Stopping here means you tackle Khambatki and Pasarni rested and in daylight.
    • It avoids the peak. Leave Pune on Friday evening, sleep at Shirwal, and do the ghats early on Saturday, ahead of the weekend rush into Mahabaleshwar.
    • It's a destination in itself. Avior Resorts sits on Wadgaon Lake, with lake-facing rooms, a pool and a restaurant, 58 km from Pune. Plenty of people plan a Mahabaleshwar trip and end up spending more time by the lake.

    Stops worth making

Shirwal (km 58). A breakfast or overnight stop by the lake. If you're staying, check-in is from 2:00 pm; a Friday-evening arrival with a Saturday-morning departure works well. The Shirwal getaway guide covers the area.

Wai (around km 90). A small temple town on the Krishna river, known for its stone ghats and the Dholya Ganpati temple. The riverside around Menavali ghat is one of the most photographed spots in the region. Allow an hour, and go early for soft light and empty steps.

Panchgani (around km 105). Table Land, a wide laterite plateau, has sweeping valley views and is best at sunset. Panchgani is also calmer than Mahabaleshwar if you'd rather base yourself there.

Mahabaleshwar (around km 120). Viewpoints (Arthur's Seat, Wilson Point for sunrise, Elephant's Head), Venna Lake, the old Mahabaleshwar temple, and a day trip to Pratapgad fort. From December to March, strawberry farms line the roads to Panchgani.

    A relaxed two-night plan

    DayPlan
FridayLeave Pune at 5 pm to beat the Saturday traffic. Dinner and overnight at Shirwal, by the lake.
SaturdaySunrise at the lake, breakfast, then leave by 9 am. Stop at Wai's ghats, then drive up Pasarni to Panchgani for lunch. Mahabaleshwar by mid-afternoon; sunset at a viewpoint.
SundayWilson Point for sunrise, Venna Lake or Pratapgad in the morning, strawberries in season, then an unhurried drive back. Stop at Shirwal again for a late lunch to break the return.

Best time to do the drive

    • October–February: the most comfortable season. Dry roads, clear views, cold mornings on the plateau. See our winter getaways guide.
    • March–May: warm on the plains, pleasant on top. Go early in the day.
    • June–September: spectacular but demanding. Heavy rain, fog in the ghats, and some viewpoints closed. Drive in daylight only and check advisories.

    Driving tips

    • Fill up in Pune or along NH48. Pumps thin out on the ghat roads.
    • Use a lower gear on the Pasarni descent on the way back instead of riding the brakes.
    • Weekend parking in Mahabaleshwar's market area is limited; park at your hotel and walk or take a local cab.
    • Carry a jacket from November to February. The plateau can be 8–10°C colder than Pune.
