The short answer: the best winter getaways near Pune are within a 60–120 km drive, where the Sahyadri foothills stay green into November and nights drop to around 10–14°C by December. Shirwal is a good example. It sits 58 km south of Pune on NH48, about 1 hour 15 minutes by car, and a lakeside stay there gives you misty mornings, warm afternoons and bonfire evenings without a ghat climb. Below is what each month is actually like, and how to plan around it.
Why winter is the best season for a short trip from Pune
The monsoon gets the Instagram attention, but for a relaxed two-day break, winter is easier in almost every way. Roads are dry, so drive times are predictable. Skies are clear enough to plan outdoor meals and sunsets. Days are warm enough for a pool at noon and cool enough for a jacket after dark. And unlike May, you're not choosing between the heat and staying indoors.
The trade-off is demand. From Diwali to New Year, weekends around Pune fill fast. Planning by month helps you pick a window that suits the trip you want.
October: the green season's last weeks
The first half of October still carries the monsoon's green: hills are lush, lakes and reservoirs are near their fullest, and waterfalls are thinning but still running. Afternoons can be humid ("October heat" is real in Pune), so plan outdoor time for early morning and after 4 pm.
- Good for: photography, early-morning walks by the water, and a combined trip to the Kas Plateau near Satara, where the wildflower season usually runs from late August into early October.
- Watch out for: post-monsoon showers in the first week, and heavy traffic on the Navratri and Dussehra weekends.
November: the sweet spot
If you can pick only one winter month, pick November. The weather settles, humidity drops, and the landscape is still green-gold instead of the dry brown of late winter. The Diwali long weekend is the busiest of the year, so book it early (our Diwali getaway plan covers the 2026 dates). The weekends after it are often the best-value dates of the season.
- Good for: couples, first family trips with young children, small celebrations, and wedding scouting (November–February is peak wedding season around Pune).
- Tip: the second and third weekends after Diwali are usually quieter than the festival weekend itself.
December: cool nights, bonfires and festive weekends
December brings the coldest nights of the year, and a lakeside stay comes into its own: mist over the water at sunrise, clear afternoons, and a real reason to sit around a fire after dinner. Christmas falls on a Friday in 2026, giving a natural three-day weekend (25–27 December). New Year's Eve falls on a Thursday, so many people will take the Friday off and make it a four-day break.
- Good for: family holidays over school breaks, year-end office parties and team days, and New Year's Eve (see our guide to a relaxed New Year's Eve near Pune).
- Pack: a warm layer for evenings and early mornings. Temperatures can swing 15°C between noon and dawn.
January: clear skies and quiet weekdays
After the New Year rush, January is calm. It is the best month for sunrise and sunset photography, with long, clean views and low humidity. The Republic Day weekend is busy; the rest of January, especially weekdays, is the quietest time for a real rest.
- Good for: workcations, solo resets and small corporate strategy days.
February: last cool weekends before summer
February stays pleasant in the first three weeks before the heat builds in March. It is also strawberry season in Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani, about an hour beyond Shirwal on the same route, which makes a two-stop weekend easy (our Pune to Mahabaleshwar road trip guide covers the route).
- Good for: Valentine's weekend, anniversary trips and pre-wedding shoots before the light turns harsh.

How to plan a winter lakeside weekend in Shirwal
Getting there. From central Pune, take the Katraj tunnel or bypass onto NH48 (Pune–Bengaluru highway) south towards Satara. Shirwal is 58 km out. Leave before 8 am on Saturdays to avoid toll-plaza queues at Khed Shivapur. From Mumbai it's about 180 km via the Mumbai–Pune Expressway and the Pune bypass. More detail is in our Shirwal distance guide.
Timing your stay. Check-in at Avior Resorts is 2:00 pm and check-out is 11:00 am. On a winter weekend, arrive for a late lunch, spend the golden hour by the lake, and keep the next morning free for sunrise. That's when the mist sits on Wadgaon Lake.
Which room. In winter the lake-facing patio rooms are worth the upgrade: you'll use the patio at sunrise and after dinner, the two best times of a winter day here. Compare room types.
What to do. The pool at midday, a walk along the lake edge, the spa, and short drives to Wai's riverside ghats or Satara. Ask the front desk about bonfire evenings when you book. Our things to do near Shirwal guide has the full list, and the resorts near Pune page covers stay options.
